9 Oct, 2024

Explore the best routes, stops, and charms of Madeira over three days with a complete itinerary designed to guide you on a journey through the island’s natural, cultural, and gastronomic wonders.

Day 1 – Explore Eastern Madeira on Your First Day

Begin your journey through Madeira in the vibrant city of Funchal, where you can visit the Mercado dos Lavradores and the historic Botanical Garden before driving towards Pico do Arieiro. Then, head up to one of the highest points on the island for spectacular mountain views, with trails that offer a close-to-the-clouds experience for those who enjoy hiking.

In Funchal, try a traditional dish such as black scabbard fish for lunch at one of the local restaurants, like Restaurante dos Combatentes.

Afternoon – Santana

Drive to the charming village of Santana, where you’ll find the iconic thatched houses. This village provides a true immersion into traditional Madeiran architecture.

For dinner and your stay, consider dining at Quinta do Furão, which offers local dishes and panoramic views of the Atlantic. There are also several boutique inns and hotels in the area, providing a peaceful and comfortable night after a long day of exploring the island’s beautiful landscapes.

Day 2 – Discover the Northern Coast and Natural Pools of Porto Moniz on Your Second Day

Morning – Levada do Caldeirão Verde

Start your day with a walk along the Levada do Caldeirão Verde, a trail accessible by car that leads you into the heart of the Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This trail offers a full immersion into the island’s natural beauty, with waterfalls and lush vegetation.

Afternoon – Porto Moniz

After your hike, head towards the northern coast and end the afternoon in Porto Moniz, where you can swim in the famous natural pools. This is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun, with crystal-clear waters among lava rock formations.

The Aqua Natura Madeira Hotel offers an excellent location close to the pools with stunning ocean views, perfect for a complete stay. Enjoy a beautiful dinner at Restaurante Orca, known for fresh seafood and local dishes.

Day 3 – Visit the Dramatic Western Coast and Peaks on Your Third Day in Madeira – “Day 3”

Morning – Cabo Girão and Câmara de Lobos

On your last day, head to Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, where a glass platform offers an impressive panoramic view of the ocean. Then, drive to Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque fishing village that inspired Winston Churchill.

For lunch, try the traditional Madeiran “espetada” and the famous poncha at a local restaurant, such as Vila do Peixe.

Afternoon – Encumeada and Ponta do Sol

As the sun sets, pass by Encumeada, a viewpoint offering views of both the north and south sides of the island, and end your day in Ponta do Sol, known for its charming streets and relaxing beaches.

We recommend your final dinner, before returning to Funchal, at Refúgio do Monte, the restaurant at Hotel Quinta Mirabela. This spot is distinguished by its refined setting, perfect for enjoying Madeiran and international cuisine with high-quality service.

Useful Tips

1- Driving time: Although Madeira is small, its winding roads require careful driving, so plan your time well between stops and preferably use an automatic car for easier driving.

2- Where to rent a car: Local companies, such as Insularcar, as well as major car rental agencies, offer customised vehicle options for all types of travel.

3- Where to park: At tourist attractions, parking is either free or low-cost; however, avoid central areas in Funchal, where traffic is heavier.
