Best Road Routes to Explore in Madeira

1. Old Road ER101 – The Scenic North Route

The ER101 road is one of Madeira’s most iconic and scenic routes, known for its winding path along cliffs and stunning Atlantic views. Driving this route between São Vicente and Porto Moniz provides a unique experience, passing through tunnels and waterfalls that cascade directly over the road.

The route includes the famous stretch between Ponta Delgada and Boaventura, ideal for adventurous visitors seeking dramatic views and epic experiences, especially when encountering public transport and lorries along narrow sections. For travellers who prefer a more relaxed pace, consider stopping at the viewpoints to take in the scenery and capture impressive photos.

2. The West Route – From Ribeira Brava to Porto Moniz

The West Route is ideal for exploring charming coastal villages and the famous natural pools of Porto Moniz. Starting from Ribeira Brava, the journey takes you through mountains and secluded villages, such as Seixal, known for its black sand beach and panoramic views. During the trip, stopping at the Garganta Funda Viewpoint to witness one of the region’s most impressive waterfalls is highly recommended.

Moreover, ending the route in Porto Moniz offers a unique opportunity to swim in natural pools formed by lava while observing the wild Atlantic.

3. The East Route – From Funchal to Ponta de São Lourenço

For those wanting to explore the island’s east side, this route reveals a completely different landscape. We recommend starting your journey in Funchal and heading towards the Pico do Arieiro viewpoint, at an altitude of 1,818 metres, where you can view Madeira’s highest point.

The route continues to Santana, famous for its traditional thatched-roof houses, and ends at Ponta de São Lourenço, a peninsula with rock formations sculpted by wind and sea. This location is one of Madeira’s most photogenic spots, perfect for hiking and a picnic in an unforgettable setting.

4. Central Route – Encumeada Road

The route via Encumeada is a must for those wanting to cross the island from the comfort of their car. This journey begins in the south and heads north, departing from Serra de Água. The road winds through mountains, offering spectacular views over the deep valleys and dense Laurisilva forests, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Upon reaching the top, at the Encumeada Viewpoint, you’ll have panoramic views of both sides of the island. This route is especially enchanting at sunrise or sunset, when the mountains are bathed in golden hues.

5. The South Route – From Calheta to Jardim do Mar

This last recommended route provides a pleasant contrast to more mountainous drives. Starting in Calheta, famous for its golden sand beach and rum production facility, the road heads towards Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, two coastal villages where the waves attract surfers from around the world.

With stops for a relaxed walk along the promenade or lunch at a local restaurant, this route offers a more laid-back experience of Madeira.

Useful Tips for Driving in Madeira

  • Road Conditions: Roads in Madeira are generally well-maintained, but be prepared for sharp curves and steep inclines. We recommend renting an automatic vehicle, as it makes driving easier for those unfamiliar with hills.
  • Weather: Check the weather forecast before setting off, as conditions can change quickly, especially in the mountains.
  • Parking: On some scenic routes, such as the ER101, parking spots may be limited. So, plan your itinerary carefully and get your personalised car to make the most of each viewpoint and point of interest.
